If you are looking for critical essays on Dreiser, see the bibliography in Theodore Dreiser: Beyond Naturalism. The book itself has a lot of essays on Sister Carrie, too.

I have found a good web-site on Dreiser. It's called "Theodore Dreiser: the Naturalist." It contains useful information about the background and rhetorical analysis.

Here is the URL:

I think University of Texas has a lot of web pages on American literature.

I am a student at New York University and have just completed a course -
"Murder in the Gilded Age of New York." One of the books that was
required reading was a book about the real life murder, at the turn of
the century, that Theodore Dreiser based his novel "An American Tragedy"
on. If anyone is interested it is:

North Country Books, Inc., 1986.

For a dissertation on the social and cultural context of occultism in America and the United States in the early 20th C, I am interested in locating sources -- diary entries, references in personal correspondence, etc. -- that would illuminate Dreiser's relationship with the notorious British occultist Aleister Crowley (1875-1947). Did Dreiser ever write a fictional treatment suggestive of their relationship?

I am not on the Dreiser discussion list, so please respond to me directly
at bjverter@phoenix.princeton.edu.

Many thanks,

Brad Verter
